The Mistake

I made a mistake once

And I was unaware and uncaring

Of the consequences of my actions.

I made a mistake once

And I hid it well and

Deep within me.

I made a mistake once

And I never tried redemption

Until it was too late.

I made a mistake once

And was fool enough to think

I can forget and move on.

I made a mistake once

Years ago, and try

As I might to correct it,

Erase it, forget it or make it right

It has still come back

After all these years

to haunt me and to tell me

That my mistake was to destroy myself

And try as I might, it will

Always have consequences.

Always have permanent damages.
